These collages explore the entanglement of humans and nature as observed throughout my time in Ireland. The works were created through the digital compilation of both photographs, drawings, and analog paintings. They are intended to represent the reclamation of nature in particular, and to portray Ireland in a broader sense.
While in Ireland, I’ve been especially drawn to repetitions and cycles present in the environment and culture. I’m particularly interested in the cause and effect relationship between the people and the land; how that is represented by urbanicity, geology, and the Irish emphasis on sustainability.
Local farmers have taught me that many of the limestone fields and hills were once full of forest, but an increase in farming led to deforestation, a decision made for agriculture with lasting consequences on Ireland’s environment. However, with a declining population in the Burren, trees have begun to sprout through the cracks of stone.
